Etching Copper and Brass

Hi Stacy, I was wondering if it ok to use black StazOn ink, or will only the red work?
Thank you for your time,
Judy

Stacy's Answer:

Thanks for your question, Judy. It has long been the belief that you could only use red StazOn as there was an ingredient in the pigment that made it more resistant to the etchant. I took this as fact, as did many others. After all, when your told fire's hot you don't need to stick you hand in it to arrive at the same conclusion. ;)

When talking with a fellow jewelry acquaintance, however, she has been successful using the StazOn black. At nearly $9 apiece, I didn't want to buy all the different colors to see which ones work and which don't. So it is possible that other colors may work but at this time we know that red and black do work with the ferric chloride. I do not know how well the black would hold up with other mordants.

If you already have a lot of the StazOn colors on hand, perhaps you could experiment and let us know!

Hi Stacey,

Do you know if the stazon can be used with the salt water etching technique?
